Episode Highlights

In our inaugural episode, we feature Professor Brant Inman from Duke University. Professor Inman discusses the future of cancer treatments with a particular emphasis on bladder cancer. He poses an intriguing vision: “If we could kill the tumour without the need for radical surgery, boy would that be a boon for our patients. And I think that’s where we’re headed.” This conversation, set against the backdrop of Headingley Cricket Ground, explores the potential of nanoparticles, the abscopal effect, and the impact of microplastics on treatment methodologies.

Our second episode shines a spotlight on Professor Mike O’Donnell from the University of Iowa. Known affectionately as the “Mad Scientist” of uro-oncology, Professor O’Donnell discusses the stagnation in drug treatment approaches for bladder cancer. He critically examines which drugs should be used in the future and the evidence supporting these choices, providing a provocative look at the need for change in clinical practices.

In episode three, Miss Helena Burden, a consultant at the Urologic Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, shares her experiences from one of Europe’s busiest urology departments. Her insights into the impact of Covid on urology treatments and the future directions for day case surgeries are particularly enlightening.

Episode four introduces us to Professor Roman Zachoval from Charles University, Prague. As Head of the Czech Urology Association, Professor Zachoval explores the promising field of functional urology and telemedicine. His discussion on the influence of the microbiome on urologic health opens up new avenues for understanding and treating diseases.

Dr. Lana Bijelic from The Peritoneal Surface Oncology Centre in Barcelona is our guest in episode five. Her conversation revolves around the complexities of peritoneal treatments and her research trajectory, influenced by her training with Dr. Sugarbaker in Washington. Dr. Bijelic emphasises the necessity of evolving smarter strategies to combat cancer.

Episode six features Professor Shingai Mutambirwa, the head of the Division of Urology at the Sefako Makgatho Institute in Pretoria. Professor Mutambirwa’s unique perspective, “You mustn’t fight cancer, you must become friends with cancer so that you can actually control your friend,” offers a profound philosophical approach to managing the disease. His work on prostate cancer, variant cell bladder cancer, and the African genome project is groundbreaking.

Our most recent episode showcases Assistant Professor Dr. Juan José Segura Sampedro, MBE. Dr. Segura Sampedro discusses the advancements in targeted therapy and new drug delivery methods in peritoneal surgery. He also shares an amusing anecdote about how dealing with drunken English tourists led to him receiving an MBE, highlighting the unpredictable entanglement of professional and personal experiences.
